5 Signs Your Boiler Needs Replacing, Not Repairing

Every boiler eventually reaches a point where another repair stops making financial sense. Here's how to know when you've hit it.

It's over 10-12 years old. Modern condensing boilers run at 90%+ efficiency. Anything installed before the mid-2010s is likely running well below that, quietly costing you more in gas every month than a new boiler would in monthly repayments.

You're calling an engineer more than once a year. One repair is normal wear. Two or three in twelve months usually means the boiler is failing as a whole, not just one faulty part, and each repair is buying you a few more months, not a fix.

Parts are getting harder to source. Older or discontinued models sometimes need parts on order, meaning longer waits and, sometimes, higher prices simply because the part is scarce.

Your energy bills have crept up with no change in usage. A struggling boiler works harder for the same heat output. If your bills are rising and nothing else has changed at home, the boiler is often the reason.

It's making noises it never used to. Banging, kettling or gurgling usually means sludge or scale build-up. Sometimes a powerflush resolves it, but on an older boiler it's often a sign of accumulated wear that repair alone won't fully fix.

If two or more of these sound familiar, it's worth getting an honest opinion before booking another repair. Our engineers will tell you straight whether a repair or a replacement is the better call for your situation, not just which one we'd rather do.
