Combi vs System Boiler: Which Is Right for Your Kent Home?
This is one of the most common questions we get asked, and the honest answer is: it depends entirely on your property and how you use hot water, not on which is objectively "better."
Combi boilers heat water instantly, on demand, with no cylinder or tank needed. They're the right choice for flats and smaller homes with one bathroom, where space is at a premium and hot water demand rarely overlaps, one shower running at a time is typically fine.
System boilers work with a separate hot water cylinder, meaning hot water is stored and ready to go, rather than heated on the spot. This makes them better suited to larger homes with two or more bathrooms, where several people might want hot water at the same time, a combi can only deliver so much at once, a system boiler with a decent cylinder handles simultaneous demand far more comfortably.
The trade-off. A combi saves space, since there's no cylinder to find room for, but has a ceiling on how much hot water it can deliver at any one moment. A system boiler needs a cylinder (usually in an airing cupboard), but gives you stronger, more consistent hot water flow across multiple outlets.
Our honest take. If you live in a flat, small terrace, or a home with one bathroom, a combi is almost always the right call. If you've got a family home with two or more bathrooms and mornings tend to be a scramble for hot water, a system boiler with a good cylinder, particularly an unvented cylinder for genuinely powerful pressure, is usually worth the extra space.
We'll always base the recommendation on your actual property and household, not on whichever's easier to fit.
