Is Underfloor Heating Worth It? A Straight Answer for Kent Homeowners
Underfloor heating gets asked about a lot, usually alongside a kitchen extension or bathroom renovation. Here's a straight answer, not a sales pitch.
The genuine upsides. Heat rises evenly from the floor rather than blasting from one wall-mounted radiator, so rooms feel more consistently warm, with no cold spots near the door and no radiator eating up wall space. It runs at a lower temperature than a radiator system for the same comfort level, which means lower running costs over time. And there's simply nothing to bump into, no radiator, no pipework on show, just floor.
The genuine downsides. It costs more to install than a radiator in the same room, particularly if it's being retrofitted into an existing floor rather than installed during a build or renovation when the floor's already being dug up anyway. It also responds more slowly than a radiator, it takes longer to heat a room from cold, so it suits rooms you're heating consistently rather than ones you want to warm quickly on demand.
Where it makes the most sense. Kitchens, bathrooms and extensions being built or renovated from scratch, where the floor's coming up regardless, make underfloor heating a genuinely easy addition rather than a disruptive retrofit. Whole-house retrofits are more of an investment and worth weighing carefully against simply upgrading your existing radiators.
Our honest take. If you're already renovating a room and the floor's coming up, it's worth serious consideration, the extra cost at that point is relatively small. If you're considering it as a standalone project purely to replace working radiators, the return on investment is a longer conversation, one we're happy to have honestly rather than just quoting the job.
