Boiler Checklist for Homeowners

Identifying the type of boiler you have

Does your new home have a combi, system, or a regular boiler? It is very easy to identify the type of boiler you have, a combi boiler is often small and wall-mounted with no external tank. A system or a regular boiler on the other hand, has a storage tank to store the hot water.

To distinguish between a system and a regular boiler, you have a regular boiler if the cold water tank is installed in the loft.

Is the boiler working?

Check whether the boiler is in great working condition. This can be done by quickly carrying out a visual inspection. There are a few things you can look out for, which include:

- Are there any error messages on the boiler’s screen?

- Does the heating or hot water work?

- Is the pilot light on?

- When was the boiler installed?

It can be hard to find out the information you need for the questions above, and sometimes the best thing to do is to ask the previous homeowner.

Knowing the boiler details

Identifying key details about your new home’s boiler is a good idea, first of all, the manufacturer and model. Finding the manufacturer is usually pretty easy - there’s often a badge smack bang on the front of the boiler. The model can be a little trickier. There should be a data label somewhere on the boiler, but this varies by manufacturer.

Next up, you’ll want to check if the boiler is still under warranty. Again, this will depend on when the boiler was installed and who installed it.

Finally, it’s a good idea to ask about the boiler’s service history. A regularly serviced boiler is less likely to go wrong than a neglected one.
